This little baby fell to earth, still in its nest, from 20 feet up. I saw a little tail sticking out from a clump of leaves in my neighbor’s front yard and new we had a little lost soul on our hands.
No Mother has made an appearance probably because the neighborhood killer cat -destroyer of all small mammals- has been licking his chops five feet away all morning.
After much panic, my best friend across the street came over with a laundry basket to protect the nest while we waited for a “squirrel whisperer” to come advise us of our next move.
What he said didn’t sound like an animal lover to me though he may be right. “He’s gonna die either way, so let nature take her course.” He put the baby and nest up a tree and drove off.
Ive had to be away for several hours now. I fear the assassin cat, who I shooed away five or six times, went back to the base of the tree when he saw us drive down the street. He knows that baby is going get tired and fall out of the tree again.
Dammit!
When I get home, I’ll see if the baby is still clinging to the tree, and if I can, I’ll try to coax it down into a safe place where I can feed it and make sure it stays warm and not eaten for dinner.
I’ll take care of it until I can get it to a more stubborn rehabber. My dogs are gonna go crazy along with my husband.
If worse comes worse, I can always set up my tent and the baby and I can sleep outside with the killer cat. We don’t believe in giving up.
